Artful Thurday Round 8 - Faux Lucite Posies

Hello! I'm back...sort of....this is a very quick...down and dirty tutorial...what could I do if I had more than 15 minutes to blog?

How can life be such a whirlwind? I don't want to bore you with the details of how few hours there are in a day to do everything...mostly because I know that everyone I know, and probably you too, wishes and dreams of more hours, more quiet hours, to leisurely finish everything that is on our plates. So, I have a little art project....but because I didn't get to let it percolate very long...the application of how far to take it can be left to the reader's creative imagination. I suppose as I leave to go on a weekend quilting retreat, I'll be able to think of hundreds of different ways to use this project. Thankfully, I can leave that for another day.

Here is my project
Begin with assorted paper punches, colored pencils, and frosted, ruffed up shrink plastic.
Lightly color the rough side of the plastic and punch a small hole in the middle.I use my embossing heat tool and a baking pan to shrink the plastic...hold it lightly with the pointy end of a small paint brush. Heat and shrink until flat...quickly, while still hot, pinch and form into a teeny, tiny, flower.
Mold a little or a lot. I tried with both the shiny part and the rough part showing.
I have purposely saved the little stamens that are part of vintage posies...knowing I'd use them sometime...this is the time. I've pushed them up through the little hole and I love them!
The next thing is to find some little leaves, put all together and wrap with floral tape. Add some vintage seam binding, a bow and decorate.

Forgive me if I've made a mistake or forgotten a step...because I've been sick...all of life got piled up in one day....have fun and best wishes!

Thank you to everyone who left a comment wishing for me to recover from the winter sickness that hit. The last time I remember being sick like this was 1999...so I'm grateful to be pretty hearty in health. But this one knocked me...when I finally went to the doc, I had myself a sinus infection, bronchitis and a touch of pneumonia. Whew!!! So, I'm sorry about the second week of no Artful Thursday post...and I am finally feeling better! :)

So sorry...I've fallen prey to the winter illnesses...I couldn't even scrounge up the energy to think of a project :) But, I'm convinced that it will be over soon and I'll be good as gold and back to "normal." Hah! Normal? That's what my friends would say... :)

Artful Thursday - Super Easy Luxe Candle

One thing I love about all the great products on the market for artists is that for pennies, I can create lovely home decor items for just a fraction of the prices I see elsewhere. And even better, if I'm in a tight spot...like having to get a gift on the spur-of-the-moment, this beautiful candle is one I fall back on many times. It is easy, and when finished, I think rather pretty.

For the base I've used several different things...I've used an old jelly jar; I've used a juice glass, and today, I used a plain glass candle holder I found at the local dollar store.

Supplies:
computer generated artwork
clear sticker paper for ink jet printers
embellishments
battery powered tea light

If you are computer savvy, then you can begin there. I measured the circumference of the glass with a piece of ribbon, and opened a new document with those dimensions. I chose several pieces of past digital collages I have done, and put them together to fit the glass, keeping in mind that the sticker paper is clear. You could also take a collage you've made to fit the same dimensions and have it printed on the clear sticker paper at your local photocopy store.Then, carefully peel just a bit of the paper from the back and begin to place on the glass. Usually I will clean the glass and then wipe with alcohol to remove any natural oil that may have transferred onto the glass from my hands. Carefully, burnish the air bubbles out and make sure there are no wrinkles in the sticker on the glass before moving on to removing more paper. Continue until all the sticker is burnished on the glass. Then I think the fun and play can really begin as you embellish to your heart's content.
One of my favorite parts is putting the little tea light in the candle holder and turning it on. Then you can really see the prettiness of the sheer design.

Goodbyes and Hellos

To be among the first group of artists to fill the "Lollishop Design Team" slot was a true honor for me. It is such a boost in all aspects to be associated with such a group. Thank you so much, Sadie Lou, for allowing me that opportunity...and thanks to everyone who stopped by to see what each of us on the Design Team created for that month. It is so fitting, I think, that we go out in the season of love and hugs and kisses...which are my sentiments for this lovely world of art and artists.But, it is time to say hello to a new group, new blood, new art - as the Spring Lollishop Design Team gears up for its for reveal. But before that happens, here is my last offering for you all. A crepe ornament I snapped up from my local scrapbook store with the thoughts of embellishing it for my last reveal.

Artful Thursday - Clearance Ornament Do-Over

Welcome to week 3 of Artful Thursdays!

Everyone knows about after Christmas sales...you know, where you go to see what is left after all the "good" stuff is scavenged? I was recently at Hobby Lobby, and, with no intention of buying any more ornaments, I happened upon these huge, plastic fake crystal ornaments begging for a makeover. I saw one hanging limply from a peg, broken, with the large crystal hanging out and that "a hah!" moment came over me. I discovered that the whole ornament comes apart and the parts are way more cool than the sum!

So I've been thinking about what I would do with these. They are, once dissected, like a stash of mini-frames, waiting to be filled.

Artful Thursday Interruption!!!

Okay, Artful Thursday just was interrupted for a message from our son-in-law returning home from Iraq...our house is now a flurry as my daughter gets permission to go to see him a few days early before he is released on Saturday, so we are in a hurry to pack her, my two younger daughters who want to go with her, and their new baby...so stay tuned, I will post the results of my Artful adventure when I return from work today...I hope I haven't dismayed too many, and I do hope and will keep my fingers crossed that you will return for the final chapter. EDIT: Okay, I'm back on track. Since one of Julie's comments on her original post was about "using it or sending it on it's way..." I've been faithfully committed to using up supplies that I have on hand...this could take forever!

The first thing I did was to take off the fake silver shine of the plastic ornament by brushing on white gesso. It sticks to many smooth surfaces and I like the way it almost instantly ages the plastic. With a bunch o'stuff, I just played...auditioned, took plain white flowers and glittered them up...buttons, earrings, ink, some Stickles, and one of my favorite items to create with, seashells.

I'm always looking for ways to recycle items to fit my aesthetic. Sometimes it takes a while to see what it "could" be, but half the fun is in the brainstorming.

Artful Thursdays - Embellishment Inspiration

Thursdays are about to become one of my favorite days of the week; because Artful Thursdays, from the imagination of Julie Collings, are all about just playing....something I haven't done for quite a while.Each Thursday, those who are participating will gather supplies, make something artful...anything...maybe something that has been percolating on the back burner for a while...maybe some fun technique that has been passed by...then, on Fridays post about.

Artful Embellishment No Pressure Collage

Sometimes when I'm rusty and the creative wheels are turning hard - I pick out a bunch of different little objects from the studio stash - book pages, playing cards, ric rac, lace, ribbon, buttons, jewelry, ephemera etc. and move the items around, folding them, scrunching them - kind of like brainstorming. I audition a lot of various little bits until I'm completely happy and love what I've ended up with. For me, this takes the pressure out of commiting pieces to a collage by permanently tacking them down, and somehow, I'm more free to experiment and find those combinations of lovelies that just feel right together.

Sometimes, like in this piece, I have a theme or color scheme or specific subject that I want to play with. No rules and no specific "end" in mind help me so much to forget making "something" and I'm able to "just make" something.

A New Year...And New Adventures!

I've been waiting to tell you about a wonderful and very satisfying on-line class I participated in at the end of 2009...it was called Artist Class. Well, artist class is back for February, with with a full menu of beautiful and easy tutorials, some of which you can see in the charming mosaic above.
If you have heard of, or taken the Artist Class, then you know how much fun it is, how many exclusive downloads are available and how accessible the projects are for every skill level.

I've been inspired to cook again! Over the last several months, my passion for cooking cooled to a barely lukewarm ember. Lots of life situations all mixed together to dampen that love, but I feel like I'm on the upswing now.

The promise of a gourmet store opening just blocks from my house began to fan that little ember...so I began stalking the storefront, waiting for the "opening soon" sign to become the long-awaited "open now" sign, crossing my fingers that it would live up to it's promises. Well, it is here! And it was worth waiting for.

Walking in, I wasn't sure what would greet me. Several stores have opened in our area in the last year, all with the claims of being "gourmet" or "European bakery" or "high end." I would excitedly run to each one, only to be disappointed with their barely-more-than-the-corner-bakery offerings. But my new-found love was not any of that! It was all I had hoped for and more.

Beautiful lighting contributes to its decadent atmosphere. I found bins containing all manner of sea salt; beautiful, large chunks of Pink Himalayan sea salt glistened like rose quartz, black lava salt, salt from France, salt from New Zealand, Celtic sea salt...and several bins of lovely, delicious-smelling smoked salt. I grabbed some applewood smoked sea salt...it adds a really yummy depth to all the foods I've used it in. I thought it would be too smoky, but it is just right!

There are bins filled with at least 10 different kinds of orzo, hand-crafted artisan pasta, exotic (for the Midwest, anyway) grains like Bamboo rice - basmati rice soaked in bamboo juice - red/black quinoa, french green lentils...organic herbs, olive oils, balsamic vinegars, and the cheese...oh, I'm in heaven!

And to make the experience even more surprising, Savore has a beautiful kitchen with an eat-on bar/countertop where they will be conducting cooking classes. And...they serve food, dreamed up and cooked by actual "chefs!" with a menu that changes weekly. LOVE!

I went home with some amazing finds: burrata, a fresh mozzarella cheese with a cream center; truffle butter (cuz I'll have to make a lot more tips at the coffeeshop to get the real truffle oil at $42/bottle); bamboo rice, black and red quinoa mixture; tuscan herb blend; a really nice culinary rasp (since my son used mine for a tool and snapped it in half); and finally, a jar of beautiful clotted cream, the first time I've found it here, which will force me to make these cream scones just to have something to spread it on.

Now I'm really hungry! I hope cooking is like riding a bicycle...cuz I don't have all day to relearn how to cook! :) I'm off...

November Design Team Reveal

It's been so much fun to receive a package in the mail with lots of goodies to make things with. With some vintage Christmas items from Chocolate Letters and Sadie of Lollishops, I decided to plunge into Christmas. Here are the two items I've made...

I've really been trying to upcycle, recycle and re-use old and sometimes forgotten stuff. So I found this little plastic wreath floating around the house and grabbed it, embellished it with a reproduction diecut and various vintage ornaments. I thought it might be too green, so a bit of white spray paint took care of that!

And I can't forget ornaments...they are fun to make and don't take too much time if you try to be quick and don't think to hard about what goes where.

Pop on over to the Lollishops blog...I'm sure Sadie has something up her sleeve for anyone who stops by the blog. And don't forget, there are other design team reveals as well.

Our next reveal will be on December 1. It's been lots of fun making "stuff."

I never get tired of taking a white length of vintage seam binding and transforming it. Each time is like I've never dyed before...I love the surprise - like opening a gift - as I watch the change and see the end result. Each piece is like a snowflake, no two are ever the same, even from the same dye. I've made some for my shop if you are interested.

Gothic Chic Slipper

Many weeks ago, when I decided to join a bunch of swappers for a Vintage Halloween Ornament Swap, inspiration hit immediately. Usually my mind swirls with ideas and then goes completely blank. After a few different idea prototypes, which I loathe, I despair and have nightmares. The deadline looms, dark and dreadful, and suddenly, in a burst of energy, ala Edward Scissorhands, I frenetically
cut and paste and glitter... until...my little piece of swap magic is created. Sometimes I really like it, and sometimes I hate what I've made and wonder if I'll be allowed into any more swaps!!!

Not so this time! I knew right from the start. It had to be a bit dark,
a bit gothic and a bit Marie {as in Atoinette, of course!}
After a little searching for a shoe pattern,

I threw a couple of digital images together to form the sole of the shoe,
flocked and glittered them, glued on a little crepe paper and here it is:
the Gothic Chic Slipper. This is one I ended up really happy with.
My box of ornaments hasn't made it to Wisconsin yet.
But when it does, it will be a very Happy Halloween for me!

The First Lollishop Design Team Giveaway

Several weeks ago a parcel was delivered to my mailbox. It was from Sadie Lou, the very ambitious lady who began a very shabby- and cottage-style online boutique known as Lollishops. Inside the parcel was a design kit containing several bits of inspiration. With four other talented women, I am part of the first Lollishop Design Team, and our mission is to take the kit sent by Sadie Lou and use it's contents to create with. We had cart blanch to make with the kit whatever we envisioned...and today is the unveiling of our creations.

Take a peek and see what we all did with our bits: handmade lollies, vintage button bits, dolly stickers, a tag of sweet, pastel trims, lace, vintage jewelry, vintage seam binding, and a few miscellaneous goodies.

Instead of putting my up for sale in my Lollishops store, I'd like to giveaway the goodies that I've made from our first design kit.

Oh my gosh...I just found this feature in Flickr...I've seen the "blog this" button but never tried it: perfectly sized, beautiful photos - and I can write the entry, too. Lately my photos that I'm uploading through Blogger are really bad...fuzzy and ugly. (Just scroll down to the pictures of the Christmas in July pictures to see what I mean). Now I am back to loving the pix that I take! LOVE this feature!

The Upcycling of Nostalgia

Old items that get a new, hipper, longer life with a little bit of altering and TLC are now, I guess, referred to as "upcycled." So I've been doing a little upcycling myself, with old containers...giving them a prettier {i think they are prettier ;)} existence.

I've made them useful as well...filling their newly renovated space with what I've been calling Art Candy...little leftover pieces and bits of a nostalgic past - destined to be fresh inspiration for future creations. If they seem as if they are calling to you, they will be here, waiting for you...

Hello to all of you Christmas fans! As a part of the Lollishops Christmas in July Party, the elves have been busy in the "frou frou" workshop to make a few special gifts for our party...and the best part (of course I'm biased) is that they will be going to a new home after today because I'm going to give them away!

First the elves have prepared a sweet cotton candy inspired Christmas collage. They searched their bins and found lots of vintage and vintage-y goodies for this collage. It's kinda big - 12x16 - but filled with lots of goodies, glitter and fun!

Note: an apology to all who visit here today...my camera is being funky and the picture above which shows the whole collage is not anywhere near the quality of picture I like to take...check back this afternoon for better pictures.

And then, I've directed my little workers to put together two custom Christmas Candy Art & Embellishment & Inspiration packs. But the good news is that we will wait for the winners to tell us their favorite colors so the Art Candy packs can be made just for them!

A Christmas Party is Coming - Save the Date

An old saying reminds us that Christmas comes but once a year...well, that has changed. Everywhere I go I see "Christmas in July." I was even at Hobby Lobby last week and I could not really believe that the aisles are already filled with Christmas everything! Remember when we used to lament that after Halloween was too early?

My Lollishop: Willy Nilly Art & Whimsy

Very late last year I applied to be a vendor at a new venue and was accepted. So now, in addition to my Etsy shop, I have a place with other like-styled artists. Maybe you already know about Lollishops, a fairly new boutique of juried cottage style vendors, but just in case this is your first time hearing of it, let me tell you a little bit.

Lollishops is the creation of Sadie of Sadie Lou Who fame. She built Lollishops to be similar to other boutique sites, but going a step further, she has created a virtual cottage-style emporium so that lovers of all things shabby, sweet, cottage-y and pretty can find just about anything they need in one spot. I love the different categories, and I can tell that Sadie thought a lot about how to name them because they are cute and clever.

I commend Lollishops to you...the other day I decided to just go down through the list of vendors to visit each one and see what pretties they are offering. Turns out I was in for a treat.

The Beauty of Swaps

You can see from recent posts that my life has become filled to overflowing with lots and lots of family activity. Marriages, babies on the way, birthdays, summer, holidays, lots of family to visit with...so, so busy. And really, isn't that true for all? Anyway, I figured a swap would be the perfect diversion to some not-so-happy things...and two would be even better! And that is just what I did...
My first swap partner is Renee from Chateau of Remnants. Not only was this her first time as a swap hostess, but she was my very own partner as well. Here are a few pictures of my swap to her in the Summer Solstice Swap. She collects apothecary bottles....and I had the luck of finding one for her!

Scrumptious Summer Palette

If ever there were an inspiration for us to gather color palettes from, it would have to be the eye candy colors of summer produce. Who does not love the colors of a summer sunset: eggplant, melon, tangerine, blueberry, lemon...? When I wander the tents of a summer outdoor farmer's market, I am so drawn and mesmerized by the forecast of color, I never go home with my budget intact; instead I clumsily lug my overload through the sea of market-goers to the safety of my car. Then, when I return home, I pour all my purchases on the countertop and drink in the intoxicating color of it all.

These luscious hues are the inspiration for the hand-dyed vintage seam binding I have been fascinated with of late. And I've made enough to go around! If you'd like to gather a basket of these delicious ribbons, you can visit me here or here.

I've Been Dyeing

Vintage seam binding, that is. It's just another one of those things I used to do. And now, just as I have been revisiting my days of graphic design by creating digital collages, I've returned to dyeing. Not that I ever was completely immersed (ha!) in the world of hand-dying, but I did like to dye my own silk ribbon for another of my by-gone pastimes: silk ribbon embroidery. Silk ribbon embroidery is beautiful and very colorful art, so genteel, ladylike and lush. I'll have to post a few pictures of past projects (and my plans for future projects). But back to dyeing.
The feel of vintage seam binding is so soft and silky, and I LOVE the colors one can buy. But I am always drawn to the rumpled, not-quite-perfect, aged and crinkled look of ribbon that has been tucked away in Grandma's sewing basket. So I've tried to replicate that fabulously worn look, for myself to use and for you, also. Blueberries & Cream, Strawberries & Cream and Kiwi & Cream are the flavors I've started with, and can be found in my Lollishop, as well as Etsy. Flavors to come: Peaches & Cream, Honeydew, Cantaloupe, Sun-kissed Tangerine and other yummy ribbon confections.

A Yummy, if Filling, Taste of Life

Don't you find that life sometimes comes at you in tiny doses; just enough to nibble on and be satisfied...a little crudité of sorts - goes down easy and is perfectly digestible...pleasant... But then, sometimes life is a kazillion-course dinner that leaves you so full and bursting, it is a true wonder that movement of any kind is possible at all. So much on the menu of life, right now, as I'm sure is true of many of you.

The Appetizer: Courtship
In February, a very nice Young Man, who our oldest Daughter has known for many years, decided to make his play for her heart, inquiring of my husband and me if we would grant permission for Young Man to date Our Daughter. Hmmmm....after a lengthy chat, (more interrogation than discussion) we gave tentative approval. You know, we just didn't go through the joys and pains of bringing a daughter into the world, teaching and loving her all those years to turn her over to just anybody! And, happily for us, as an Army guy he would be leaving for a month or so for training. Sure, you can date Our Daughter...aw, too bad you have to leave so soon! {Heavy sigh of relief!!!}

You know that little saying about absence making the heart grow fonder? Just when we thought a little distance was a great happenstance, along comes The Young Man on a few-day pass. Young Man desires to speak with us. His nervousness and the Daughter's perplexing absence make Mom and Dad's heart beat a little faster. He's so cute, though, devoid of Army guy bravado he tries to work up enough nerve, for, for what? That is the next course, of course!

Next Course: The Big Question
"Can I marry Your Daughter?" "No way!" bellers father. Too late, Young Man and Daughter have already decided. But they want the blessing so they are willing to wait a little while for Father to get used to the idea.

Third Course: Left Behind
Young Man has been commissioned to Iraq. Before he leaves, he and Daughter do indeed become engaged. Lots of emotions...teary goodbyes. A year is a long time - and a long distance will separate them. This is a heartbreak for Daughter, and also for those who look on.

Fourth Course: Texas Wants Us
Waiting is sometimes okay. Sometimes impossible. This time not to be. We pack up and take a family vacation to El Paso to witness the vows of Young Man and Daughter. We are happy. We are sad. We are a bigger family now. I wasn't ready for this. Aren't I supposed to have time to mourn for the loss of a daughter, etc, etc. How funny that amidst my whining our young niece says: "You aren't losing a daughter, you are gaining a son!" How come I didn't see that?

Dessert: 1 + 1 = 3
Now, the Young Man has become Phil to us. My young daughters have a new victim to wrap around their cute little fingers; my older son gets the brother he has wished for. Daughter, Michaela, is a wife, now - an Army wife, praying and hoping and waiting for Phil's return. As we all are. But here's the icing on the cake: when Wife greets Husband and they are reunited, they will each take on an additional name: Mommy and Daddy. Life is strange and weird and you really cannot know what a day will bring. For us, at least, it has brought many blessings. We are truly grateful, and oh-so stuffed!

Art is Art - Even if Your Canvas is a Latte!

Happy springtime regards to all! The warmth and sunniness of spring is finally making its debut up here in the cold north! We've had a long and snowy winter, but when I heard the first red-winged blackbird and saw the first crocus emerging from its frozen prison, I knew that the long days spent waiting for spring were ended.

Finally! I had my camera at the coffeeshop I work at...I've been practicing these on customers' drinks for a while now and was so happy to have remembered my camera. I LOVE it when the milk is just the right consistency with just the right amount of tiny, silky bubbles...not too thick, not too thin...then it is just right for making beautiful designs in the dark crema of the espresso!
Art is art, no?

A surprise greeted me this morning when I returned home from work. A message from Sadie Lou letting me know that my handmade vintage glass glitter was chosen for an Etsy treasury. How fun is that? If you want to see it up close and get the full effect of the beautiful images, go here.

Last week, the girly girl silhouette tags I printed also made it in a really stunning treasury based on silhouettes. But last week went by before I remembered to learn how to do a screenshot of that page...it is gone, gone forever.Been having lots of fun at the computer, working in my favorite, Photoshop. Love putting together lots of different images and seeing what happens in the end. I'm so lucky and blessed to have the computer that I do, and also the time to play with it. More fun to come!!

And then, like most of you, I've been getting the itch to play with Spring and Easter art goodies. Hence the charms featuring bunnies and chicks and who knows what else. I really think it has beckoned the warmer weather to visit us!! Just a few days ago (Monday) it was below zero. Today, a balmy, no-coat, short-and-tshirt 44. Can the tulips be far behind?

Things I Used to Do...and Started Doing Again

Part One
I used to do graphics. Back in another life I was first a journalist, then a typesetter, then proofer, then graphic artist and then freelance all-of-the-above. When the desktop computer first hit the business , the programs were clunky and clumsy and not very intuitive - from a typesetter's point of view, anyway! Once I got my first Mac, though, I was hooked. Fast forward to today...it is all so amazing and FUN!

This little blog has helped me to begin to love again! My love for Photoshop and all things digital has grown deeper...I'm very fond of all my programs. And I've been playing around with some art. Getting my feet a little wetter as the days go by. Just one of the things I used to do and have decided to renew a friendship with...

The colors of Valentine's Day are right up my alley. In this little collage, I'm particularly drawn to the splash of deep, rich red and how it plays off of the time-worn colors of the vintage text. The cupid figure is dreamy, his mailbag filled with letters of hope and love and other such affectations. We need more love. We need love more. Just looking at him inspires me to get it right more often. Silly, huh, how the picture of a robust little fella with wings can arouse such thoughts. I must say goodbye to him now, though, for he is off to his new home...with instructions to work his charm on another!

Brr, it's cold here! -40 degrees cold! But then so is the rest of the US! 2009 is not starting out as slow as molasses on the homefront, thougth...I love those lazy kind of days when there is lots and lots of time to snuggle in, hunker down and do really fun things. Mostly here, the days have been crazy! Minutes whiz by, then hours and days.

I've joined a couple of really fun swaps...I'll have stuff in the next day or so to share. Been working to stock my humble little shop...some cards and collages. Thinking, too, about the unfolding year ahead. What will it hold? I haven't even thought of much I'd like to accomplish in any area of my life. Well, maybe I've thought a little, but only in gross generalities. I'll have to ponder that!

Many years ago I was completely enamored with embroidery, particulary silk ribbon. I'll have to show you some of the projects I began but never finished. It's been on my mind for a long time to finish those pieces and use embroidery with paper. That's where these collaged and embroidered hearts come into play...a little plunge into that world again.

The Latest Silver Bella Post Ever

If it weren't for my new-found Silver Bella friend, Maija, Halloween may still be the last topic of interest here. But after a little elbow in the side, I decided to jump in with a small post-Silver Bella update. The rest of the gals out there have plumbed the depths of all it means to have been at that primo event...posting, if you have been keeping up - just moments after all was said and done. There are wonderful blogs to read and get the inside scoop on Silver Bella if you'd like.

My experience as a first-time vendor was so much more than I had hoped or imagined. It was so delightful to have lots and lots of fun-loving ladies stop by, chat, get to know one another better, and of course, shop. The Vendor Market Faire was magical...and as my friend who was with me said, "you'd never know there was a recession..."

Thank you, thank you, thank you! to everyone who stopped by to see my little offerings. Everyone had such positive comments and encouragements. I know that money is a little tight, perhaps, for many of us, and I'm humbled and grateful for every single cent you ladies spent, at my table and all the other ones as well.

I've been a lazy picture taker lately, I have a nice point and shoot Nikon but it seems it takes so much to get a good picture. I didn't even remember I had my camera until Silver Bella was almost over. Yeah, I need a V-8! Which is a little way to say I'll be back soon, very soon, with pictures of swaps, goodies, and other such delights.

Halloween Mail

Well, that was a long enough dinner break. On to swap #2 from Hop Hop Jingle Boo!
I stumbled across Hop Hop Jingle Boo and Debra Schoch. And she was hosting a swap. And although I said -nay promised myself - that I wouldn't indulge in any swaps besides the Silver Bella swaps, I couldn't resist! The swap was for an ATC, a jointed paper doll, any kind of art inspired by wings and flying things, and then one owl-inspired something or other.

I've never made a paper doll...made a paper dress for a garland swap once, but never paper dolls, and certainly not a jointed one. I ended up just drawing a pattern coaxed out of the old brain cuz I didn't really like any of the patterns on the net...and now, I'm HOOKED. I loved, loved, loved the process of making all the parts, and then, putting all the funky looking separates together to form the doll was amazing. So fun. I must do that again. Thanks, Debra, for letting me tag along.

Debra is a great artist and designer. And she was my partner....that's luck for ya! You'll love the pictures of her offerings. They are so charming and full of great ideas and art.

Have You Seen October?

...because I completely seemed to have missed it! I cannot wrap my mind around this being the first day of November. And that is a frightening thought; even more scary than some of the kooky costumes I've seen for the last few days!

Why is November 1 so frightening, you ask? Well, let me tell you.

1. It means that for over a month I have sorely neglected this little diary.
2. It means that I have oodles of pictures from a couple of great swaps.
3. It means that my trek to Silver Bella is only 11 days away!!! EEEEKKKKK!!!!
4. It means that if I don't want to be completely humiliated as a first-time vendor at Silver Bella, I've got to drink lots of espresso, stay up even later and work, work, work!!! DOUBLE EEEEKKK EEEEKKK !!!!!!!
5. It means that you'll have to hang in here for a very longish post...if you want to, that is.

First of all, let me show you a few peeks at my desk, getting ready for Silver Bella...I've been busy not only making goodies for the Vendor Faire, but I HAD to sign up for a few swaps as well. It just wouldn't be the same to go to Omaha empty handed and come back without any great art from my Silver Sisters! what a MESS! :)

From that mess, these few sneak peeks of goodies to come....

I'd totally love it if any Bellas are reading this and decided to come by my little set-up at Vendor Night at Silver Bella and say "HI." I'd love to come back to Wisconsin with a stash of new friends! I'll be having a fun little give-away that night...I promise to post pictures of the giveaway before I leave for Omaha.

Now for the second order of business...SWAPS.

I was able to participate in two very lovely and FUN swaps.

First was ArtsyMama's Sweet and Sinister Swap

This year she offered a completely unbelievable line-up of guest artists doing tutorials on a blog she had set up just for the swap. For 10 bucks I was able to go to the blog any time I wanted and take part in learning the tutorials. It was worth every single cent and I'd do it again in a heartbeat.

My partner was my very lovely blogging friend, Heather, from Speckled Egg. I met Heather a couple of years ago participating in her swaps. I think she has some of the best swap themes out there and I wouldn't want to miss one, ever! Anyhow, how lucky was I to get her for a partner? Not only is she sweet, but she's a GREAT swap partner and artists! And her website shop, Speckled Egg is fabulous. You'd really love the items she carries for sale.

Here is some of the loot from Heather....because I missed October, I don't have everything she sent...some of it went directly into my stomach, some went to beautify other art pieces, and since I was running around like a fool trying to find everything so I could show you, I forgot some of the pieces.Okay, so here is a quick list of everything in my package:

Summer Lovin'...Had Me a Blast

Labor Day was a true retreat for me. Remember when I said I wanted to have some serious fire time? Well, I can count on one-and-a-half hands how many times I left the warmth and the stress-melting comfort of the firepit. Went into town once...(can't go camping without bacon!)...strolled down by the water with the kiddies a little; (I am blessed with a husband who is just a big kid himself, so my young'ns had a constant companion - one to kayak with, swim with, catch frogs with, take the scenic nature hike around the lake and so on)....took a chair down to water's edge, looked into the moonless night and marveled at the brightness and closeness of the stars. I'm sure if I had tried, I could have just reached up and plucked one out of the sky. I can't recall the Milkyway being so bright - lucky me to have a new moon night! Heaven seemed a stone's throw away and the speech twinkling from the starlight pierced my heart, whispering to me of God's Greatness, His Presence, His Omniscience, His Love! Glorious!

And so the next season begins...here in Wisconsin already the sun is casting it's golden light on the landscape, the air is a little crisp and the temperature is heading downward. From now until the snow flies summer will have a few last hurrah's as "Indian Summer" days make their appearance.

As for me, you'll find me in the studio getting ready for Silver Bella in November....and there is sooo much to get ready for!

Summer Days

Not once this summer have we managed to get a few minutes to make it to our favorite spot...camping by the water. Usually we've left behind city life and its "survival of the fittest" for the lesser demands of wilderness life. We love to set up camp far away from the camper filled hot spots of Wisconsin where my favorite pastime is plopping by the fire and never leaving it until we pack up to go. Stress and worries melt away. I love to just lay back and look up - the blue sky is like a bulls-eye when surrounded by the tall pines and birches that stretch heavenward. The sounds of the forest are soothing to me - if all is quiet I can hear the woodpeckers doing their thing...the bluejays yelling and screaching at one another...insects buzzing, the swishing of the tops of the trees as the breeze blows through...distant laughter of the kids at the beach...crackling fire...chipmunks rustling through the underbrush...sometimes if we are close enough to the water, I can hear the gentle lapping of the lake reaching the shore. It is heavenly, serene and beautiful. A respite indeed.

even in the northwoods one can eat gourmet pear, walnut and bleu cheese salad!

But, we haven't been there yet...not until next week. In the meantime, I trekked northward with a gang of girlfriends on Thursday for a quick reprieve of life-as-I-know-it - a sort of impromptu trip to hang out by the fire, eat good food and laugh a LOT! Linda's place at Duck Point is beautiful...we spent time out on the peninsula, relishing the cool breeze that makes life in humidity a little more tolerable. It was divine. Now I can hardly wait until this next weekend. I'm in desperate need of a lot of fire time. A lot of drinking in the beauty of the northwoods and a lot of doing nothing! Well, I will get up from the lounging to eat!

I surely hope that you all find time to get away to some kind of retreat. One can't go wrong comtemplating the simplicity of nature and gaining strength from its beauty.

And I'm doin' the happy dance! That's what I wrote to Jessi upon receiving the very exciting news I won THIS!!!!....her Halloween Brag Book featured on ArtsyMamas Sweet and Sinister Swap Blog. If I'm allowing myself only one swap, not counting Silver Bella swaps {hah! we'll see how THAT goes!:)} I guess I chose the right one. And for more than just because I won something! You could also have seen me do the happy dance several days ago when Kari revealed our partners! I was delighted to find I was paired with - my lovely and sweet friend, Heather. You probably know her as Speckled Egg; where some of the best swaps found in blogland come from. I've been dreamin' up lots of fun goodies for Heather...and now I'm begging for a swift kick in the you-know-where to bring them from dreamland to reality.

Look what flew into our corner of the world! I've never seen this stunning creature in real life until two days ago...ran to get my camera...tried to get a good picture but the wind was blowing, my hands were shakin'...but I like it anyway! Creation is soooo beautiful. I think I'll go enjoy it some more! See you soon...

Only One Swap Allowed...

For me, that is! I kinda got wild...my eyes were waaayyy bigger than my energy level this summer...so for fall, I'm just doing this one...I'm sure of it...well, I'm pretty sure. (Except for the Silver Bella Swaps!) But, Artsymama's Sweet and Sinister Swap will be fun! And, this one is different - the swappers have signed up for the Sweet and Sinister blog where we will have our fill of sweet and sinister eye candy and great tutorials for the next several months. The fun has already begun. I can't be too booked, though, because I must save energy for Silver Bella. And it's getting closer.

Remember when I said what a wallflower I was last year? Well, I read my own blog entry and got to thinking that it sounded like I didn't meet anyone! Which isn't true! I did meet a few of the girls I had been swapping/blogging with, and I ended up in the classes at tables with some very colorful bellas!

These two gals were the first two I ran into. I had never seen either one in person, or even a picture, really. I overheard someone say "speckled egg" and I knew I had to see her with my own eyes. I had participated in many of Heather's wonderful swaps and wanted to see the face to go with the lovely person I knew her to be from her swaps. I didn't get to see her much after that, but we've continued our on-line friendship. Heather has been a true inspiration to me, and without even knowing it, has given me the confidence to step out and try some things in the artworld I may never have done. Thanks, Heather!

And then there was Melissa, better known to many of us as Little Melfie. Again, so sweet and lovely, witty and very funny! I love to remember my first Silver Bella class, at Melfie's table, just listening to her banter with Hope. I met her through her Fairy Jar swap...one of my all-time favorite swaps to have been lucky enough to participate in. She leaves the bestest, most encouraging comments. I'm lucky indeed to know her, even the little bit that I do!!!

And my third friend I was looking forward to seeing at Silver Bella was none other than my swap partner for Melfie's Fairy Jar Swap, Natalea Kandefer, of Kandeland blog fame! I don't think I've ever seen a more prolific poster! She is a whirlwind of energy and spunkiness. I was blessed to be able to have her for a whole class, at my table, talking with me. She didn't stay for the whole Silver Bella weekend so I didn't get to see her again, but we've kept up with each other through blogs and flickr.

So looking forward to November when I can meet more of my like-minded blog friends. Makin' new friends, keepin' the old.

As if all this Silver Bella news weren't exciting enough, I just found out I'm the July featured "guest designer" on the Alpha Stamps website! I feel like this year has been too good to be true for me....too many dreams are being fulfilled. Pinch me! Am I awake?

Fairytale Soaps

Anyway, last fall I was cruising around blogland and happened upon an application to become part of their design team...I've got no stars in my eyes but I thought to myself "why not try!" Something in the past I probably never would have done but I'm feeling a bit more "wild and crazy" lately. So I closed my eyes and pushed the "send" button.

Well, so many talented artists applied that I couldn't feel even a teensy bit bad to find out that I did not make one of the coveted spots, but I did get a consolation prize - an email asking if I would be interested in taking one of the monthly guest designer spots. Even as I remember reading that email my heart is beating a bit faster!!! Yes! Yes! Of course!!!! I could hardly believe it but it was true - and now you can visit the Alpha Stamps fabulous website and browse the unbelievable selection of all things artsy, and then take a little peak at what I've made with the supplies Alpha Stamps sent to me!

I'll admit up front my nerves took a beating. I have made a pact with myself to always do my best to come up with something original...but that is becoming so much harder to do with the influx of ideas coming into my brain from the web, flickr, all the delicious blogs I read, and artists that I adore! So I feel a bit like I fell back on some tried and true forms of art. My ego wanted to really WOW the gals at Alpha Stamps, but I was mostly satisfied with the outcome...

So there...for now...a little bit of reveling...not necessarily because my art is "published", but because I took the chance...I took a plunge I'm not used to taking. And there are more to come...

Silver Bella Sophomore Year

I'm so very thrilled to be able to make the trek again this year down to Omaha, to the land of Teresa McFayden and the kingdom of Silver Bella. Last year was my first year, and oh my, I was in shock! Just seeing all the faces that went with Flickr and blogs and websites...I felt like a freshman going to high school on the first day and being awestruck by all the already-initiated and oh-so-cool upperclassmen.

But this year I'll be a sophomore. One who is in her second year of an endeavor. Now that I know a little bit of the landscape and the goings-on, I'm hoping to be less of a wall-flower, timidly watching all the escapades, and get in on some fun myself. Well, maybe.

The line-up of instructors! Oh the line up....and, as if the instructors weren't grand enough, Mary Engelbreit will be the guest speaker at our little luncheon. Is it November yet?

Ever since the day after Silver Bella last year, I've been just waiting for round two. My only sadness is that a blogging friend who I met last year and was looking forward to getting to more this year, may have to pass. I know that she is probably sad too, but sometimes life is just like that. I'm kinda mourning that loss. But there are a few others I got to meet and I'll get to see them again...a reunion of sorts...this time, though, I'm a little wiser, a little older and not a freshman!

Whew! What a fast couple of weeks...

The opening of Willy Nilly Art & Whimsy on Etsy has been a fun and fabulous experience thus far. To my utter delight, lots of you sweet gals gave a home to some of my offerings...thrilling, I would say! I'm looking forward to the completion of some of the many ideas vying for room in my brain.

In the midst of all the opening and packing and shipping I have sent out two swaps. I still have trouble saying "no", especially when the hostesses are some of my favorite hostesses.

First, the Feathered Friends Vintage Bird ATC swap hosted by Danielle of Vintage Dragonfly Studio.Then a few days later the "Jewels of the Sea" swap hosted by Heather of Speckled-Egg. Fun swaps and another push to make art. Plus, I'll be getting some fabulous returns in the mail!

Willy Nilly Art & Whimsy opened today! Yeah!!!

I love old Sailor's Valentines...that is where the inspiration for the "Message on a Bottle" series was originated. Lots of sea inspired art being created everywhere...and I know why. The sea is beautiful, mesmerizing, natural glitter, sparkle and bling. Its colors are hypnotizing, and the sound of the waves is strangely calming.

And the embellishment packs...so fun to put together - like a collage of their own. I am in the process of putting together "Art Candy" in the form of small packs, jars and other candy store-esque goodies.

Not everything I'm working on made it in the shop today. I have a few more tricks up my sleeve...but I'm happy that I followed through and just did it!!!

Thank you to my friends who have encouraged this little pastime! I wouldn't have done it if not for your prompting!

A New Adventure!!

Back in January I was inspired to find a word that held all my artistic and life *hopes* for the coming year. I chose "Plunge." I wrote a little about it in that post. But, okay, back to today...in June...

One of the ideas I'd been mulling over for quite some time was the opening of an ETSY shop. I became quite discouraged when I browsed ETSY finding what seems like millions and millions of items for sale. How in the world can one compete with millions of other pretties? I guess, one tiny entry at a time! I'm not going to think about how all that stuff works...I love to make things and I'm going to do just that. Make them, love them and, and then, if any kindred soul out there wants to take it home, alrighty then! And with that I'd like you to meet "Willy Nilly Art & Whimsy". Willy Nilly, because that's kinda the creator I am...here and there, whenever the mood strikes - whatever I've been itching to make. You can expect a little art, a few lovely vintage finds and some sweet, sweet supplies. Really, whatever strikes my fancy!!!!

So I am officially announcing the opening of my humble little

I don't feel ready, but one of the things I'm finding out about taking the "plunge" into any endeavor is that you have to, well, "take the plunge!"

I Never Knew...

How strongly I was attached to our golden retriever...
How much her snoring was a strange comfort...
How much her incessant following me from room to room would be so dearly missed...
That her need to be near us, at all times, wasn't really an annoyance after all...
That her expressive eyes would become one of my favorite ways she had about her...
That someday I'd miss hearing the rustling noises coming from the kitchen...
That I'd gladly let her steal my burger if I could again...
That the love she gave stole a piece of my heart...
That our beloved Zuzu was fatally ill...
Until that dreadful day when we took her to the vet and heard his words, cutting like a knife, ripping out those parts of my heart that I had no idea she occupied...
Amidst sobbing children and stoic husband we said goodbye to our sweet girl. So many tears. Where is the spring that sends them forth in such abundance? Is there nothing that can limit their flow?

Maybe at times like this the crying is for more than the lost friend. Perhaps the oppressive melancholy gives one permission to cry for other lost beloveds. Cry for the first child to leave the nest - not soon enough for the son itching to be a man in the world - too soon for a mother's timeline. I'm not ashamed that I want my children close to me... Bravely I've let him go on his own and I try not to call too often. But I'm lonely for him. Truly only just yesterday he was a little boy. Cry for the daughter turning 18; bolstered by age to need no one. She's still here with us, but I'm already lonely for her. Cry for the passing of friends and loved ones into eternity. It's lonely without them. Cry for the sweet, sweet doggie who had to be wherever we were. Lonely. Cry. And so the deluge comes.

Oh how we miss her...
We begin many sentences these days with "remember when Zuzu would...." In time the raw sadness will give way to a mellow reminiscense - we'll smile and fondly share with each other a "zuzu anecdote."

To say that a dog is "man's best friend" is no longer a cliche to this girl...in fact, I do believe, in some small measure, our great God has manifested a portion of His infinite love to us through our faithful companion. And ZuZu was that, if nothing else, faithful and ever-loving. A gift indeed.

The Forget-Me-Nots Remember

Winter has had an exceedinly firm grip on Wisconsin this year. Many of winter's atrocities could be banished from our memories with the tiniest hint that Spring still exists. Even as late as last Friday we had frost warnings - threatening to kill the very presence we've been pining for. But the forget-me-nots always remember when Spring should arrive and they burst forth at just the right time...snatching us out of the doldrums of never-ending cold, brown dreariness. Don't you just love their mesmerizing color? I can never decide upon gazing at them if they are periwinkle or lavender. So here is my little ode to spring. May it finally come for good.

Pick a theme...(my partner picked eclectic circus) find stuff...if you can't find stuff...make stuff....photograph stuff...send it to swap partner so they can take better pictures - and then have a party! Terisa from was my partner for this one....the package I received from her was a fairytale party in a box....she took some beautiful photos of what she sent me. How I Accidentally Maybe Almost Probably Drove You Away

Okay, so I'm clicking around in the "comments setting" of Blogger today, and there I see it. The reason why I've only received comments from google bloggers: the default choice for comments in Blogger is "receive comments only from Google Bloggers." And it's checked. WHAT? Are you kidding me? I can't be...nay I won't be....isolationist. I've taken action, boldly checked the box that says: "anyone can comment, even anonymous." Honestly, does Blogger have jealously issues?

Here's the part where I show how my brain sometimes never takes a leap from the obvious to the sublime....I've been thinking to myself all this time how quaint it is that all the comments are from google bloggers. Duh, Michele, that's cuz they're the only bloggers who can!!!

Is there redemption for me? Have I driven everyone away who doesn't have a google blog? Please, there's room enough for bloggers of all kinds here...won't you give me another chance?

Tying Up Loose Ends

While at Silver Bella last November, I met a great girl...Melissa Danner. She lives a hop, skip and jump from me in Illinois, and I was excited to have her as my partner in the Sweet Little Nest swap hosted by Heather. So, after what seems like a long hiatus, here are some cute pix of her sweet nest made for me. You'll love it too, just like I do, just as soon as you see the most scrumptious little bird sitting atop the nest. Thanks, Melissa.

She very cleverly put the nest on top of a glass candle holder. LOVE that idea. I might just have to use that idea in some other projects....

The Darlingness Continues...Day 4, 5, 6, 7

I must say this again...I LOVE this swap...I'm having so much fun opening gifts and looking to see what the other girls made and how they did it. Check out all the sweet photos from my swap partners...so cute and Eastery and springy.

Day 6 is my little contribution to the group: a bit of embroidery, a couple drops of solder and there you go...a groovy chick or bunny necklace to sport for Easter.

And there goes March....it seems over to me already since I'm thinking ahead to April already. Oh well...at least the lilacs and tulips and lily-of-the-valley will be blooming soon...I can barely wait for that show!!!!

Spring Soiree, Hippity Hop & Lots of Goodies

Every spring Danielle at The Vintage Dragonfly hosts some kind of spring collage swap. I've really taken to the format for that swap...4x4 collage...I love that size. Small enough to really be able to narrow down a really cute design, but big enough to execute it without it looking too teeny. Well, I was so thrilled to have this come to my mailbox...and excited to have it come from Cindy Gilstrap of Junque Art, whose name I have seen all over blogland. Super cute, don't you think? I love the symmetry of the piece and the colors are so soft and springy. Thanks, Cindy. I LOVE it!!! And that's not all, Cindy also sent along a lovely little package of velvet ribbon and vintage wallpaper. I'm learning so much about swapping by what I receive in the mail. Why didn't I think of that?

Now, how are you when it comes to opening presents? Are you one who has loads of self-control and can stare down a cute little package and wait for "the day" to dive into it? Or are you one who sees a little wrapping paper, a pretty bow and just can't stand the anticipation of knowing what's inside that little box?

Well, I thought that I was the former, all full of self-control...never letting a little package get the best of me. Until I received my packages from the Hippity Hop Swap...11 little packages all crying out to be opened....right now!!!! The idea is to open one present per day leading up to Easter. And I can say that I did alright opening just the days I was supposed to - until yesterday. My girls were leading me astray by begging me to open ALL of them...and I made a good stand - a awile, and then - (and if any ladies from this swap are reading this, close your eyes so you won't see what I really am made of) - I said the magic words...."okay, but just one!" Hah! It's like trying to eat just one piece of Godiva chocolate, or eat just one sweet potato Terra chip...I felt all frenzied as the remaining unopened packages just kept staring at me. Okay, just one more...and one more....but, then sheer agonizing will power kicked in and I stopped...I avoided the complete and awful train wreck of opening all of them. Naughty children, leading their poor weak mother astray like that!

So here I am to show you the loot. It's fabulous and I love all of it...well all that I've opened! Don't worry though, I'll have enough dignity to only show the ones I can on their own special opening day. But for today, I do get to share three with you. So here we go.

Present #1 - Cathy Nash

Those two smaller pictures above are from Cathy Nash of Tadpoles and Teacups, and it was her fabulous packaging that really made me want to open it. As you can see in the photo below, she fashioned the most delicious chocolate papier mache bunny! With mica and glitter! And really cute fringed vintage crepe! She is a master indeed and I really loved the green and white bow! This opening of presents is fun!

Present #2 - Amy Malaise

I opened this cute little present to be greeted with a sweet double-sided little charm. Amy from Crafting by Candlelight made this for us. Such cute graphics...hmmmmm...I know just what I'm going to do with it!!! Thanks Amy, my girls especially are trying to get me to hand it over to them.

Present #3 - Teresa Schneider

Bunnies, bunnies everywhere!!! How cute is this little bunny from Teresa? Miss Teresa from Plum Water Cottage really knows the way to a girl's heart. Who can resist anything so sweet? I'm pretty sure that she made this with papier mache and a mold. A little paint magic and some sparkly glitter and voila! Cuteness itself! Thanks so much for your work, Teresa. My collection is growing and I LOVE it!

Bye Bye Birdie...

What is it about birds and nests and eggs that we never seem to tire of? Birds appear in all kinds of art: altered art, collage, paintings, sculpture...you name it. I love looking at it all. I was just browsing a Yahoo group where they are making Bird "Inchies". They were all stunning. Show me a little bird perched on a branch, all ruffled up and I melt. That's why I think I so enjoyed participating in this last swap, The Sweet Little Nest Swap. It was almost like therapy to decorate and alter a little nest. Of course, I added a sparkly white princess birdie.

If you want, you can go to the Flickr group and see many more sweet little nests...all so different, all so utterly adorable and all of them eye-candy.

My bird is gone now, on her way to my partner...it's a little lonely without that birdie in my living room. Why, I do believe I'm kinda havin' - empty nest syndrome!

The fabulous Teresa McFayden has done it again. For the fourth month in a row, she has put together a terrific e-zine filled with the most endearing projects, complete with detailed step-by-step picture instructions, give-aways and swaps. Every Monday, Wednesday and Friday for the month of March I'll be able to log into the e-zine and get my fill of inspiration. In the past months I've only done a couple of the projects, but I'm going to do more of the projects for March actually in the month of March. Ha! Yeah right!!!

Spring is in the Air...

and so is my Spring Soiree Collage for a swap hosted by Danielle Muller of The Vintage Dragonfly Studio. I really fell in love with this collage once it was done...I adore all the sweet spring colors that came together. Lily-of-the-Valley is very high on my list of flower loves. Second only to any kind of tulip, and of course, old-fashioned lilacs, which make living in Wisconsin a treat. The Lily is such a sweet little bit of springtime with its little petticoat flowers and heady fragrance.

This collage is just one of many swap items that I've been working on...the deadline is here for our Sweet Little Nest Swap hosted by Speckled Egg. I've been looking at the Flickr pix and they are so stinkin' cute!!! And soon, like tomorrow, I must send my package for the 12 Days Hippity Hop Swap from the mind of Heather Bluhm over here.

I've been trying to put more practice into my word for 2008 - "plunge." But the closest I've come is trying to stay artistic with the deadline and "have to" of swaps.

Hope all is well with my blogging friends...it's been a long winter for all of us I think. But the good news is, it just can't last forever!

Mermaid Fun Was Had By All

The sea is back in vogue. I've been happening upon lots and lots of mermaid art, colors of the sea, shells, glass, pearls and all things related to the sea and water. One day, not too long ago, I came upon Michelle Geller's blog, Hold Dear. She was hosting a swap. A mermaid swap. A sea-inspired swap. A swap where you gather all kinds of inspiration within the theme, make a little something for your partner and there you go.

I missed it. Too late. So I left her an "aw shucks" comment. She, the swap hostess, didn't have a partner. So one email later, she invited me to her swap. I love the colors of the sea...the water, the sky against it, the coral, pearls, shells, glass. I'm the luckiest girl. My package came from Michelle all filled with mermaid goodness. I told her that heaven was smiling on me when she thought to invite me...just look at the loot I scored. Thank you for every last little bit. How thoughtful and wonderful you were to me. The photos, of course, do not do justice to the texture and brilliant colors of all the ribbons and beads and such, but I know you'll enjoy the pictures anyway!

The bottle is the piece of art I created for Michelle. I was hoping it looked like it had washed up ashore with a message in it just for her. A little glitter, some beads, tiny shells and voila! Mermaid art!

The One-Word Challenge

A couple of weeks ago I stopped by to see Artsymama's blog. There she told us of a challenge for 2008, put forth by the wonderfully inspiring Ali Edwards. You pick a word that sums up for you, and for the coming year, what about art - or even life - that you want to live by, or be inspired by, or aspire to.

So for the past several days, I've spent time mulling over this one-word challenge. In just moments the description and theme of 2008 bubbled to the forefront of my contemplations. I suddenly knew where I am, where I'd like to go and even some of the paths that I think will take me there. But for the life of me, the word would not come into focus for me. Just one word. One word!!! I tried and tried to make it come to the surface, kinda like turning over the Magic Eight Ball and having the answer suddenly appear. But nothing.

Was it "freedom"? No, too vague, not really at all pointed enough to define my concepts. Well, then, how about "risk." Mmmmm, no, sounds too, well, risky, like I'm going to lose everything in a market crash. Leap? No. Jump? No! Forward? Not really, but close. Every word left the itch not quite scratched. Then yesterday it came to me.

Plunge. That's it! Plunge, as in "take the plunge", "plunge in, the water's fine." Not the purrtiest sounding word, but it's a good fit and it does the job.

I'm really a scaredy-cat at heart. Always and ever second-guessing everything!!! But in 2008 I'm going to take the plunge. I've had enough of letting ideas, thoughts, and artistic musing languish in the mire of fear and "what-ifs." Fear that my ideas will bomb, that they won't be well received, that it is too this, or too that. Stop!!! Just stop that!! Plunge in, I say! And so what if all that I fear comes to pass? So what!!! Big deal!!!! At least I tried, and how can that be bad? The only place I'll get if I don't try is nowhere!

So I've picked my word. Plunge. In. 2008.

Where will I end up? Don't know! But I'm thinking I'm ready for a nice dip...

New swaps I couldn't say no to...

In the spirit of this February love reminder, and with my eyes wide shut, I signed up for some very fun-looking swaps...and not just for Valentine's I might add. So much love, so little time, so much inspiration needed!!!

Winterbella...January's Warm Fuzzy

For me, a new year, coming on the heels of the Christmas holidays, is a much-looked-forward-to retreat from all that went wrong the past 12 months. If only I could first dwell on all the blessings of the last year (maybe that should be a resolution?!)...but as luck would have it, my first thoughts turn to all those things I would have liked to have done better with. I won't bore you with all that sappy stuff, but I do love a fresh start, to make corrections on my course in life, and just to "do better."

I feel a lightness in my step, in my mind, in my heart. And let me share this completely uplifting and encouraging way to start fresh with art in mind - Teresa McFayden's winter e-zine called Winterbella. I've always been drawn like a moth to the light of Teresa's art, so this e-zine is in all ways the most wonderful kickstart to 2008.

Each Monday, Wednesday and Friday in January, Teresa adds a new project to the Winterbella E-zine. I joined in the 12 Days of Comfort and Joy e-zine from Teresa in December...and from the first project I knew she had hit on something so fantastic and wonderful! I love, love, LOVE having a little access to her creative mind and thought-process through the projects, the how-to pictures and the little Postscript message that she adds to end of each project. I couldn't love this more!!!

Maybe I'll do the art and maybe I won't. It's okay either way, cuz just following with her, looking at the pictures, reading her words is like a bit of the most decadent chocolate...slowly savored and always enjoyed. The hubbub of the holidays is fun in its own way, but it does take a little wind from my sails. Checking in on Winterbella is like cuddling up in front a fireplace after a hard day...comforting and warm and snuggly and fuzzy.

Check out Teresa's site, there's most likely room for whomever is looking for a little kickstart to a new year. Or a little January comfort and joy...

Parting is Such Sweet Sorrow

As you know from some of my other posts, I love this whole swapping business. Even though I get myself in a pickle from time to time, I am enamored of the whole process which causes me to actually make something. If left to my own devices, I fear I'd never make anything worthwhile.

But here is the bad part, sometimes out of nowhere, I make something that I love so much myself that I can't take my eyes off of it, and I can hardly bear to part with it. If it weren't for my knowing that I've made this creation with my wonderful swap partner in mind; if it weren't for my knowing that it's going to a good home, and if I weren't full of some holiday spirit, well, hmmmmm, let's just say...well, can I just say it? I'd have to beg for custody!!!

The Vintage Tree Top swap hosted by Under the Red Roof was a creative nightmare for me, at first...Bristol, my partner, loves soft colors, as do I. But she explained to me that her home demands a more traditional colored holiday theme...you know, red and green. Which are nice colors, but I have to *think* and *ponder* and nothing comes easily in this color scheme for me...but there is nothing at all wrong with having to think and ponder and muster up some creative sweat once in a while, so to the work bench I went.Well...when all was said and done, {I hope I'm too self-focused here, forgive me if I am!:)}, I loved it soooooo much, I could barely send it out. Not because I didn't want Bristol to have the best of all tree toppers I could cobble together, but because I fell in love with red and green! Hmmpff. Imagine that! Deck the Halls

My, how the days fly by!!! Here is a little post of the "Deck the Halls" art I've made for my partner, Cheryl, over at the ever-cute Rosey Posey Confections. Just a few vintage goodies, some crystal, some glass glitter and voila!!

The decorated box is just for a few little chocolate yummies I need to send along. Chocolate is my favorite holiday food group. Well, aside from a good french press of extra-strong coffee!

The Speckled Egg Holiday Gift show is still in business. An honour, a privilege and lots of fun, too!

The fun part I'm speaking of is the Holiday Art from the Nest Show put together by the sweetest hostess, Heather. A while ago Heather invited me to be a part of this show along with other amazing artists. And there you have the honour and privilege part - I'm still pinching myself! You can go to Heather's blog to find out the scoop on all the other artists that will be offering their work. The sale will start the 30th, in just a few days. Did I just say a few days? Eeeeekkkk!!!!

Tomorrow I'll show some peeks of what I've been working on. "Pleased as punch"...that's what I'm thinking when I look at how these holiday items are turning out. Perhaps you will think so too!!!

As for today, I'm finishing up a great swap hosted by Danielle of The Vintage Dragonfly Studio. I met Danielle at Silver Bella...so sweet, and I mean it! My regret is that I couldn't get to know her better - and that regret goes for all the Bellas! - maybe I'll have another chance someday.

These are my little Christmas matchbox ornaments in progress. Just a little more to go and "voila!" I'll be done!!! How is it that I am going to actually be able to mail these regular priority mail instead of overnight? Anyway, I'm looking forward to what the return mail will bring back to me.

A hat bought at Walnut, NE, better known as "Antique Town"

My stash of beautiful supplies is growing...thanks to vendor night at Silver Bella. I wandered by each table, gazing longingly at all the offerings. The once drab and plain hotel room became an enchanted land of sparkly art and prettily packaged sundries. I could hardly decide what to purchase. Of course I wanted at least one of everything. Not even one penny of my long-saved stash survived. Here are the pictures to prove it.

Charming and so imaginative! All the vendor's put a lot of thought and work into setting up their wares giving us shopping bellas a feast for the eye, but Amy's especially caught mine.

My brain is whirling with ideas and time is short, as it always seems to be. I hope you'll check in on me now and again to keep me on task. I'm off now to stare at my wonderful pile of inspiration. Wish me luck!

My deepest thanks and highest regards for the wonderful Teresa McFayden who, with her Silver Bella mavens, made this artsy wonderland a reality. So I'll just say that this art retreat was soooo over-the-top fabulous that it will take a while to unzip all that I took in, overheard, learned and soaked in.I have made a vow to let the magic and inspiration from Silver Bella percolate on the back burner of my brain before I begin to just spill out. Gotta make good coffee ya know!!!!

I'm not a reliable picture taker, but for a boatload of great pix, visit Paper Relics. Hope is a prolific picture-taker and you'll get a great overview of Silver Bella from her point of view. She is, by the way, one of the funniest and most delightful girls...and I hardly even got to know her. I have more "sightings" and meetings of friends I have met on blogs and through swaps. But more of that later, I don't want to, in my zombie state, leave anyone out.

Silver Bella Jitters

All my swaps in a pile...what have they become?

About a year ago I discovered blogland. Why it took me that long is still a mystery to me...I am on my computer traversing the internet daily, and to this day I pinch myself for not having found this wonderland sooner. Anyway...last year, I came across Teresa McFayden's site, Paper Bella, only to find out there was an artistic extravaganza called "Silver Bella" a-coming. What was this? Can I go? Oh my, look at all the WOW classes...the vendors...the fun!!! Can I go? Well, no, because you didn't find this amazing world sooner and now all the tickets are gone, gone, GONE I say. So I made up my mind that nothing!!!! would keep me from this year's event. And nothing did! I waited and waited for the openeing bell(a) {ha ha} and promptly got myself a coveted spot at the Omaha Bash. It is now just days away!! Five, 5, five, to be exact. And I get to go!!! Oh lucky, lucky, blessed me!!!

I've had to really try hard not to let the excitement disrupt my every-day duties. But lately I've been indulging myself in thoughts of the fabulous classes I'll be attending...the dizzying array of goodies I can snag at Vendor Night (for which I've been nuturing a growing stash). And that's not to mention the fun planned at a local antiques store, or the guest speaker, or the fun swaps!!

This last 12 or so months, I have also been welcomed into this paperific, artistic world though a bunch of swaps I signed up for. I've met, through Flickr and blogs and swaps, a bevy of wonderful!! gals...and I'm going to see them, and they are going to see me!!! And now, I'm haunted by such thoughts as "will they like me?" "will I fit in?" "will I be chosen last to be on the baseball team?" "can I keep up with their very clever and inventive artsy ways?"

But I've comforted myself, also, because from what I have learned from reading your blogs, is that you are all wonderful, encouraging, sweet, charming, generous, caring and, from the sounds of things on the Silver Bella Yahoo Group, a whole buncha fun!!!!

So I'm just going to be myself and I know that this is going to be THE event of the year in my life. I can't wait to meet all of you in person!!! I can't wait...

Don't Worry Project Runway Contestants...I Won't Be Trying Out

I have been scrambling to find a smidgeon of time to work on a couple of fashion pieces. Now mind you, I'm probably no threat to fancy-shmancy Project Runway fashionistas, and you might not see my line at Olympus Fashion Week, but none-the-less, I've contributed to the world of design with my very own label...it's still in the paper stage, though!! :)
You'll be the belle of the ball in the flirty little number to the left...notice the fringe at the bottom, designed to show off all your new moves on the dance floor... can you say "my dance card is full?"

And then on the right, who could resist the girl who wears her heart on her neckline...and flowers on her hem? Don this cornflower blue print dress with a hand-crocheted apron and vintage heart locket for those days when only sweet and demure will do.

Does pink velvet ever go out of style? We think not, and you'll be quite fashion forward when you wear this sparkler of a dress. Blue glitter polkadots and silver shimmer trim will get you noticed!

But how about the gal whose style beckons back to the good old days? Why, just slipping into our stripey, rosey Wallpaper Throwback Frock with it's schoolgirl bow will have you rockin' round the clock tonight!!!

Where I Love to Hang Out

This is it...this is the place I love to be above all other spaces in my house. I could stay here for hours on end - and sometimes, when other obligations aren't demanding first place - I land here in the early morning and don't leave until the rooster crows again. See, I even love it more than my bed! :) I didn't realize how much I have accumulated until I was getting the photos ready for the Web. If Only I Could...

Create. Make something. Stop throwing out everything I try. Made the piece above for a round robin book dealy thingie...made it in hopes of spurring myself because I've been dreaming a lot these days...but can't seem to wake up and do it! I'm naming the last few weeks my "Days of Shame." Days of turning wheels but no forward motion...days of yearning for sanity and a little time for not just dreaming but the creating to go with it...hmmmmm, actually, a camera would be nice, too! The one I was using was okay...did the job...and now, gone...slipped through my fingers, literally, and now, bye-bye camera! Whaaaa!!! Please stand by while I take this whining and tantrum break. Oh wait...that was part of my Days of Shame. Okay, tantrum over, whining finished. Hopefully the wilderness will be gone soon.

Has anyone else felt dry and uninspired? I'm reading all my favorite art blogs and the ebb and flow of inspiration is soooo interesting to me. Some of those artists can just go to town and I admire, nay, marvel at their superhuman powers to not only dream up art pieces, but pump them out like crazy...and every last piece is superbly done and photographed and blogged. It is marvelous to get out of my own world and travel to see what others are doing...how I love blogland. Thanks, you all, for the reassurance that art is still happening. I love it all!!!! And if there is anyone out there whose neurons are firing overtime, maybe you could send some spare energy my way...I could use a jump start!!

Good Intentions and Follow Through

I live a life filled with good intentions, but my follow through sometimes - well, truthfully many times - lags far behind my intentions. I've been intending to change. Really. Intending to send those cards to family and friends who I know would be blessed. Intending to get back into cooking and baking more. Intending to finish a few home projects that are near completion. Blah, blah, blah. Baby steps. That's what I need. Baby steps. Every little thing that I finish gives me more ammunition for those times I'm tempted to procrastinate. For every intention that becomes reality I am strengthened. So here is one of my intentions...finished! It only took 10 months. At the end of last summer I found the cutest diecut for a little cake box. Ever since that time I have thought and thought and thought about revamping it with paper and flowers and glitter and whatever else happened to strike my fancy. Well, a little swap with a few friends gave me the umphf I needed to launch ahead. This is my little "Best Wishes" cake slice box. Newly reformatted for your viewing pleasure. My new friend Natalea just received hers, and another friend, Melissa, will be receiving hers soon! Melfie, if you see this post, look away!!!! I've been toying with the idea of making these into a little kit with various papers and trims...hmmmmm.

And then there is the "Bits n Pieces" swap hosted by Jenny. Dozens of truly beautiful works of art were created. More intentions being fulfilled. Here is the one I sent to my partner, Jenny, and here is the one she sent me. Here's to this good day being filled with good intentions...and even better follow-through.

Still the Land of the Free

I'm grateful to live here. I'm indebted in ways I'll never fully appreciate to all those, of every generation, who have given to the cause of freedom...truly one of the most beautiful words I know.

So have a ball today. Celebrate with family, go to all those great picnics where everyone brings their very best dishes. Independence Day is one of the very best holidays to celebrate. And don't forget that its purpose is to cause us to remember, to ponder, to wonder...
and to be grateful.

Melt my heart. Make me smile. Marvelous. Meaningful. Mail. Miss Melfie. Michele. Mine! I'm pretty sure than anything else I could write could be better said with the eyes. Just take a look at the sweetest little project, sent to me by my new friend, Melissa. Couldn't you just eat it up? It's so stinkin' cute I can barely stand it!!!! Stay tuned...I know that on Flickr I've been just giving a few pix of my Bits 'n Pieces Swap. I'm waiting for it to arrive at Jenny's...tomorrow I'll be able to show it in its entirety. My secret fear is that the little bits I've been showing will be much more appealing than the whole collage. I like it and I'm crossing my fingers...!

Crowning Achievement

It is done. It is finished. Can I stop sweating now? Since so many artists signed up for the Hollydoodle Crown and Tiara Swap, you are possibly, even now as you visit, headed toward Tiara Overload. Your symptoms may include, but are not limited to, rolling of the eyes, hanging of the head, quickly clicking onto the next blog, sluggishness, boredom, a slight tingling in the eyes and fingers, loss of breath and lightheadedness. But bear with me, it is my solemn duty to post on this blog my crowning achievement...for my swap partner Connie, who informed me she liked pink, purple, green, vintage sewing, shells, glittery and sparkly, and other prettiness also. I am done...it is finished...can I stop sweating now? Oops, been there, said that. Who knew that so many eclectic items could transform themselves into a crown? Anyway, if you haven't jumped into the world of blogland swappiness, I urge you to find one now and get yourself joined up. It will bring you hours of dread, hours of nail biting, hours of frenzy, hours of excitement, energy and ethereal musing. But most of all, at the end, it will bring you the most wonderful feeling of accomplishment and learning, which is for me, one of the most irresistible wiles of swapping. So, I'll be looking for you! Oh, by the way, that princess above is one of the four jewels in my own crown...one of my best works, if I do say so myself!

And She Called it Moose Moss

...and I had to admit that some of the clumps of this artful moss did have the appearance of a much larger set of antlers than the usual reindeer moss we hunt for. "Here's some more moose," said the bouncing Miss Cosette. Hmm...on reflection, moss, moose...moose, moss!

And so began our escape, for a wee bit of time, to the magical world of Morgan Lake. Opportunity afforded us only a brief respite, but oh, how welcomed it was! My two youngest girls wasted no time scavenging for bits of fallen nature to set before me. For the next hour the girls brought me prize after prize, all the while exclaiming and nodding knowingly to me what great art we could make with these natural treasures. They spied this marvelous piece of nature only steps from the woodpile...it was quickly tagged as "waffle bark." "How was it made?" we all asked. No one could say for sure, but to look at it and ponder its becoming "waffle-y" was a happy diversion. Soon, though, the call of the lake caught them in its grasp.

Show and tell changed just then. Instead of reindeer moss, or delicately wispy birch bark or sticks laden with greenery, I was serenaded with dozens of tiny tadpoles...newly-hatched dragonflies whose wings needed further drying time before flying time...minnows darting from one side of a clear plastic cup to the other, fireflies and even a hypnotized frog!

The look of wonder on their faces was joy to me. There is so much in nature not to be missed. Of course, the disclaimer here is that no animals or plants were harmed in the our adventures. Every tadpole and living creature was returned - unscathed and in good time - to its home. Maybe with stories to tell of its own!

Aye, It's the Swappy Life for Me

My friends around me think I'm a little loony. Lately, our conversations go something like this: Friend: "Hey, whatch doin' today? Got any plans?" Me: "Well, I'm finishing up my winter dangly for an online dangly swap with the Garden of Pink Shadows, how 'bout you?" Friend: "Um, is a dangly what I think it is?" Me, acting like I don't know what they really mean: "You know...it's a piece of artwork with something sparkly and dangly hanging from it." Friend, rolling eyes and snorting: "Oh, okay, a dangly, uh huh. Hey Jane, Michele's makin' a dangly." Then I endure assorted humiliations...for the next week! This is my life, and if you create art, maybe it's yours, too...

Later, I excitedly ask them if they'd like to see my offerings for a handmade postcard swap. Or my bird tags, or my Spring Tweet collage. It' doesn't have quite same the connotation as a dangly, but they chortle anyway. Well, most of them. I do have one cohort.

"Hey Michele, can you go to a movie?"
"No, I need to mail something out tomorrow and I have to make it tonight."
"Why do you put yourself through all that stress? You should just tell those girls you can't swap anymore."

No!!! No!!! No!!! I'll tell you why, because I LOVE it...and I'm addicted. I can't stop reading other blogs and signing up for swaps. And, by the way, I think I might even be making a few friends! Maybe someday it'll be passe to me, but right now, it's my incentive to make something...to have somebody to make it for; somebody who signed up too and LOVES danglies, and postcards, and collages and...That's why.

I know that there are others out there like me. Admit it, you are all swapaholics! If you're not, try it, just once. The first time I felt so sheepish about it, thinking all the while that maybe I'd get an email back saying "no, you can't join our swap, we don't even know you!" But it was never like that. I love all the gracious hostesses who let me join them. Thank you all, so much.

Mums the word, now, when my friends ask me what I'm doin'. Can you imagine what they would say if I told them, "oh, nothing, just finishin' up my jar fairy for Miss Melfie's Jar Fairy Swap." I don't even want to go there!

Yo, ho, ho, and a bottle of glitter...it's the swappy life fer me!

Room For One More?

This is it. I'm jumping into the blogland pool. I've been testing the water for awhile now and have been waiting for just the right time to commit to this new venture. But, I wonder, is there room for one more? For one more artist in the same genre? For more pictures of my recent swaps? Of my latest Flickr additions or creations? For late night thoughts and musings? So as I was thinking these things, I reminded myself that just this week I've added 6 more lovely and not-to-be missed blogs to my "daily addictions" list. I've been soooo inspired by each and every one of them...and not one of them is redundant to me. So there. If I only inspire myself, that will be good, and I'm hoping to make a few more friends along the way. All the different swaps I've participated in have left me wanting to know all you fine ladies better. To answer my own question...I'm sure there must be room. I have yet to read anything on any blog to make me think otherwise. It's just my own fear talking. Well, enough of that. So here I go...one little toe at a time.
